Aprašymas

Sports Coaching and Athlete Welfare: Sustainability, Ethics, and Rights examines the cultural, structural, and power dynamics that shape coaches' everyday practice, by placing athlete welfare, voice, rights, and inclusion at the centre of the discussion, examining how discrimination, exclusion, and maltreatment are outcomes embedded in sporting cultures, organisational practices, and performance-driven systems. Yet coaches are not simply products of these systems, since within every structure lies room for judgement, resistance, and choice, and it is this space that the book asks coaches to occupy more deliberately.

In response, the book advances sustainability, more commonly discussed in environmental terms, here extended to its social and ethical dimensions, as a foundation for both this critique and the transformation it points toward. Grounded in commitments to welfare, voice, rights, dignity, justice, and inclusion, the early chapters trace how historical, political, and cultural forces have produced these patterns of harm and marginalisation, which these same commitments now demand be addressed. Ethical theory and athlete rights then offer complementary guides for protecting athlete welfare over time. Moving from critique to transformation, the book turns to how coaching cultures can be reshaped, how coach education can support that shift, and how reform has taken shape in practice through a real-world case at Swiss Olympic. In doing so, it shows how coaches can build more equitable, athlete-centred, and sustainable sporting environments.

Written for coaches, coach educators, athletes, students, and sport leaders, Sports Coaching and Athlete Welfare: Sustainability, Ethics, and Rights offers both a critical examination of coaching as it is and a constructive vision for what it could become.
